LAURIE REID Project: Crushed Glass May 15 - June 28, 2008 BIOGRAPHY PRESS RELEASE |
|
Reid drips, scrapes, sprays and draws this time around with glue and spray adhesive, which bind the glass (both black and mirrored silver) to the paper. The variety of effect ranges from the lyrical (elegant swirls and wispy lines) to the downright gritty. In this show, as in all of Reid’s shows, light is as an essential element of the work. Upon entering a room full of these drawings one imagines oneself entering the glittering and enchanted realm of a fairy tale. The room sparkles as light flickers and flashes off the highly reflective surfaces of the silver glass. Unlike her watercolors where light quietly hovers on the subtle edges of the raised lines, this light is dramatic. It moves endlessly over the permanently frozen images inviting a spry meditation on how the hand of the artist and the eye of the viewer come together to create new and interesting visual experiences. LAURIE REID (born Minneapolis, MN) received an MFA from California College of the Arts in 1996 and a BA in French Literature from Reed College in 1986. Her work has been widely exhibited in numerous gallery and museum exhibitions at venues such as the Mills College Art Museum, SFMOMA, The Drawing Center, and the Berkeley Art Museum. In 2000 Reid exhibited in the Whitney Biennial and in 1999 she was the recipient of a SECA Award from SFMOMA. Her work is included in the collections of SFMOMA, The Museum of Modern Art, NY, the Whitney Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art among others. |
